Let's take a look at 5 ways to prevent memory loss due to aging.
The memory blinks as I get older. It is too early to give up leverage because of the'phenomena of aging'. New experiences can stimulate pathways that improve memory.
According to Harvard Health Publishing in the United States, the brain has the ability to improve even with age. Dr. Alvaro Pascual-Leon, medical director of Hebrew Senior Life affiliated with Harvard University, says: "The mechanisms in place may slow down over time, but the brain's ability to change does not decline."
So, just like exercising to strengthen aging muscles, we need to put more effort into keeping the ‘muscles’ in the head in top condition. One of the best ways to do this is to constantly challenge yourself to learn new things.
The experience of learning new skills and accessing information stimulates the brain to form new neural connections. This is called neuroplasticity, and it is a process that keeps the brain functioning at a high level for life. Dr. Pascual-Leon explains, "The more you challenge yourself, the better your brain's ability to maintain and further improve your brain's skills, especially your memory."
The key to neuroplasticity is a constant challenge. The key is to try something you've never done before, rather than an activity you're already familiar with. The frequency is also important. You can't expect positive results with'just once'. Choose an activity that you can do regularly for at least a few days a week. Ideally, it's a good idea to do things every day that take you away from your mental comfort. Finally, activities that allow you to enjoy and measure your progress are desirable. You can feel a sense of accomplishment and stay motivated. Harvard Health Publishing suggested five ways to stimulate the brain to help improve memory.
1. Video game
Video games are effective in improving the memory of the elderly. According to a study published in last year's "Behavioral Brain Research," people aged 60 to 80 selected one of three video games after taking a memory test and played 30 to 45 minutes a day for 4 weeks. Types are interactive 3D games (Super Mario and Angry Birds) that you have never played, and familiar 2D games (Solitaire). Afterwards, as a result of re-memory testing, the 3D game group has improved cognitive memory that recalls past events, objects, and people compared to the 2D game group. Even after stopping the game, the effect lasted for four weeks.
2. Dancing with your partner
All kinds of dances, such as swing and ballroom, require fast movements and a variety of brain skills. Respond to the dance partner's movements, plan and implement how to respond, and memorize the stages and sequences of the dance. “Physical activity helps promote neuroplasticity,” said Dr. Pascual-Leon. So combining movement and mental challenge can have a greater effect.”
3. Learning musical instruments
According to many studies, learning a musical instrument strengthens memory and stimulates both left and right sides of the brain. Learning a new instrument can be more stimulating to your brain than to start over with the instrument you learned as a child.
3. Art creation
All artistic endeavors, such as paintings, ceramics, and sculptures, can activate the brain through hand movements, concepts, and images.
4. Foreign language learning
There is a lot of evidence that bilingual speakers have fewer problems with memory even as they age. According to a study published in the 2019 Frontier of Neuroscience, it is never too late to learn a new language. As a result of studying a second language for 4 months (16 times each 2 hours) among 59-79 years old, it was found that the neural connectivity of the brain regions responsible for attention, working memory, and speech improved.
5. Bridge Game
Classic card games require concentration. The process of tracing the sequence of various numbers and determining the best strategy for defense with the card partner helps the brain.
