Will a person who had a happy childhood have any mental health problems in the future?
It is widely known that poor childhood can increase the likelihood of mental illness after adulthood. If so, would a person who had a happy childhood have any mental health problems in the future? Unfortunately, there is no such guarantee.
New research has found that both positive and negative childhood experiences manifest as anxiety and other mental health disorders as they enter adulthood. Therefore, it is up to each individual's ability to adapt or fail to adapt to unexpected situations that can affect their mental health.
The study was conducted by the University of South Australia in Australia in collaboration with the University of Canberra. The results of a study examining how childhood experiences relate to mental health after adulthood were published in “Current Psychology.”
In Australia, nearly half of the population suffers from mental illness at some point in their lives. Among them, it is estimated that 314,000 children (about 14%) will be 4-11 years old. As a result, the Australian government's annual expenditure on mental health services is estimated at $9.9 billion, or about $400 per person.
The study reaffirms that people who have experienced negative and unpredictable childhood are more likely to suffer from mental health conditions, such as depression and paranoia. On the other hand, it has also been found that children raised in stable and protected environments are also at risk of experiencing anxiety symptoms in adulthood.
According to Bianca Carl, a senior research fellow at the University of South Australia, the study reveals the indiscriminate nature of mental illness, while also recognizing the potential risk factors for all children. "This study shows that mental health status is not only determined by childhood experiences, and that even children raised in happy families can still have mental health disorders," he explains.
"I think our expectations for the environment and the ability to adapt to situations when those expectations are not met can influence the experience of suffering," Carl added. In other words, if you learn to adapt to changes in your childhood and how to cope when things don't go as intended, you will be better able to respond to stress or other risk factors that worsen your mental health.
As for parents, it is important to have their children have a happy and safe childhood, but it is also important to note that they should not be raised like greenhouse plants.
